What Elton John and Lady Gaga are today, Liberace (Michael Douglas) once was in the 1970s. As a virtuoso pianist, entertainer in Las Vegas and superstar of elaborate shows, he had millions of audiences worldwide at his feet. On stage and in private, he led a lifestyle of luxury and glamour. Long fur coats, glittering costumes, golden candlesticks and excessively expensive jewelry were his trademarks. Several Rolls-Royces were part of his fleet, and 39 grand pianos adorned his private villa. Everything abounded – and he himself once said, „Too much of a good thing is wonderful.“
In the summer of 1977, an attractive young man enters his dressing room after a grand entrance: Scott Thorson (Matt Damon), a simple boy from the province who would become Liberace’s prince at his side. Between the two develops a close affair, kept secret for years. A tragic yet fascinating love story that grows ever more intense – that over time became heavy with excess, vanity and jealousy.
LIBERACE – Too much of the good is wonderful – by Steven Soderbergh (ERIN BROCKOVICH, OCEAN’S ELEVEN), Oscar® winners Michael Douglas (WALL STREET) and Matt Damon (GOOD WILL HUNTING), perform in roles that are as unusual as they are grand. The rise and fall of the intense relationship between US entertainer Liberace and the much younger Scott Thorson thrilled audiences at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, thanks to two top acting performances and a stunning portrayal of the glitz and glamor of the lovers‘ world by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh.
A rarity, a fully realized bio-drama shot with a wealth of feeling and witty humor. This movie is a winner on all fronts! The Hollywood Reporter
